Hot food vending, with grab-and-go gourmet meals

Workplace dining, the modern take on vending.

Chef-made meals, heated by induction in under 7 minutes, served around the clock with no kitchen and nobody on site.

What hot food vending actually is

Hot food vending is smart vending that serves a cooked meal rather than a packaged snack. The Smart Cooker™ (hot food vending) is the cabinet that does the heating, and the Smart Fridge™ (an AI smart cooler) beside it is where the meals wait: chilled, sealed, and locked until somebody taps a card or a phone.

What separates it from the thing the phrase used to mean is when the heat happens. A hot vending machine of the old kind kept food warm in a heated cabinet for hours, and the food tasted like it. Here the meal stays cold until the moment somebody wants it, and is cooked in the minutes before they eat it. Nothing sits under a lamp.

And what separates it from a micromarket is that the food is hot at all. An open-shelf market can do sandwiches, salads and snacks very well. It cannot do a braise.

The reason that matters is what people actually want in the middle of a working day. A cold sandwich is a thing you accept; a hot meal is a thing you come down for. Buildings that put one in find the lunch hour stops being a reason to leave, which is the whole argument for having food in the building rather than near it.

What it replaces

A microwave and whatever people bring

The break room standby. It heats unevenly, it holds a queue at noon, and the smell of somebody's lunch outlives the lunch.

A kitchen nobody can justify

A servery needs a hood, a grease trap, a dish pit, a licence and people. A building with a few hundred tenants rarely clears that bar, which is the gap hot food vending exists to fill.

Leaving the building

Thirty minutes of a lunch break spent walking, queueing and walking back, in whatever the weather is doing.

How it works

Four steps, and the building does none of them.

Tap a card or a phone

The Smart Fridge™ is locked until it knows who you are. Tap, and the door opens. Nothing is charged yet.

Take the meal

Open the door and lift out what you want. Cameras inside track what leaves the shelf, so when the door shuts the card is charged for exactly that. No scanning, no kiosk, no queue.

Put it in the Smart Cooker™

The meal goes in sealed, in the pod it was cooked and chilled in. The cooker reads what it is and heats it accordingly.

Eat, in under 7 minutes

Induction heats the food evenly from within rather than blasting it from the outside, so nothing has a cold centre or a rubber edge. Each tower heats three meals at once, so three people at 12:15 is not a queue.

Because the pod is never opened until it reaches the person eating it, the cabinet does not leave a room smelling of lunch, and there is nothing to wipe down afterwards. No microwave is involved at any point.

What happens around the food

Two things run in the background, and neither of them asks anything of the building.

The cold side is watched. The Smart Fridge™ holds 32 to 38°F and its temperature is tracked around the clock with alerts, so a cooling fault becomes a message to Raptor rather than something a tenant discovers at lunchtime. Anything past its freshness window cannot be sold at all: the cabinet will not release it. That is a different standard from a shelf somebody is supposed to check, because it does not depend on anybody remembering.

The stock is watched too. Every cabinet reports what it holds, so restocking is scheduled against what people are actually eating rather than against a fixed route. Most faults are fixed remotely before anyone in the building notices, and a tenant who does need to report something uses the code on the cabinet, which opens the help page with their building already filled in. The building gets a usage report every month: transactions, popular items, usage patterns and restock performance.

Raptor, a hot food vending machine, and a microwave station

Three ways to put a hot meal in front of someone who is already at work. They differ in who cooked it, how it gets hot, and what the building has to carry.

Hot food vending in San Antonio

San Antonio is where this runs today. The company is based at 2020 Broadway, the meals are cooked here, and the cabinets that are already serving are in buildings along the I-10 and 281 corridors. Austin and Houston are the expansion markets, which is a different thing from a market being served today.

Keeping the work in one region is what makes a local kitchen partnership possible at all. Meals are cooked in San Antonio, delivered sealed, and restocked by people who can reach the building the same day. A national route run from another state can promise the cabinet; it cannot promise the kitchen.

It also sets the shape of the install. An assessment is a 30 to 45 minute visit to look at electrical capacity, the network and where the cabinets would go, followed by a written proposal within five days. From a signed agreement, allow four to six weeks, and most of that is the building's own electrical work rather than anything Raptor does. Once the circuit and the network connection are in and tested, putting the cabinets in takes two to four hours. No construction, and no kitchen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hot food vending, answered

What is hot food vending?

Vending that serves a hot meal rather than a packaged snack. A cabinet holds chef-made meals chilled and sealed, and a second cabinet beside it heats the one you take, so the food is cooked properly and served hot without a kitchen, a server or a queue.

The older idea of a hot vending machine kept food warm in a heated cabinet for hours. This is the opposite: the meal stays cold until somebody wants it, and is heated in the minutes before they eat it.

Is there a vending machine that serves hot meals?

Yes. The Smart Cooker™ heats a sealed, chef-made meal by induction in under 7 minutes, and each tower heats three at once so a lunch rush does not become a queue.

It works with the Smart Fridge™ beside it: the meal is taken from the locked cold cabinet and put straight into the cooker in the pod it was sealed in. Nothing is unwrapped, plated or handled on the way.

How long does the Smart Cooker™ take?

Under 7 minutes for a full entrée. Most meals are ready in 5 to 7 depending on what they are.

Induction heats the food evenly rather than from the outside in, so there are no cold centres and no overcooked edges, and the meal keeps the texture it was cooked with.

Who cooks the meals?

Southerleigh Hospitality Group. Their restaurant, Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery, has held a Michelin Bib Gourmand three years in a row. The meal brand is Sense of Occasion.

Meals are cooked in their kitchen, sealed, and delivered chilled. There are 16+ entrées in rotation, with gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan and keto options, and the menu rotates.

Does hot food vending need a kitchen in the building?

No. That is the point of it. There is no hood, no gas line, no grease trap, no dish pit and no health-department kitchen to license, because no food is prepared in the building. It arrives cooked and sealed.

The cabinets take about 50 square feet between them, usually in a break room, a lobby or an amenity space.

What does the Smart Cooker™ need from the building?

A dedicated 30A, 120V circuit, and a network connection: either WiFi or a hardwired Ethernet cable. One port is enough; Raptor splits it to the rest of the equipment.

The Smart Fridge™ beside it is plug and play on a regular 120V outlet and does not need a circuit of its own. The electrical and network work is the building's, and it is the only thing the building pays for: Raptor charges no placement fees and no minimums, and never invoices the building for the program.

Where is Raptor's hot food vending available?

San Antonio today, where the company is based and where the meals are cooked. Austin and Houston are the expansion markets.
