The gap between a shaker bottle and dinner

Most clubs solve nutrition twice and badly. There is a retail wall of bars, powders and drinks at reception, and there is nothing else. A member who has trained at seven in the evening and has not eaten since lunch is not served by either, so they leave and eat somewhere on the way home.

A Smart Café fills that gap with actual food. Chef-made entrées from Southerleigh Hospitality Group sit chilled and sealed in a locked Smart Fridge™, and the Smart Cooker™ beside it heats one in under 7 minutes. The member eats before they leave rather than instead of coming back.

It runs when the club runs. The cabinet is locked and opens on a tap, so a 24-hour site has the same offer at five in the morning as at noon, with nobody rostered to serve it.

That is the part a retail wall cannot match. A shelf of bars needs somebody to take the money, or it needs to be behind the desk, which means it closes when the desk does. A locked cabinet takes the payment itself, so the hours it serves are the hours the doors are open rather than the hours somebody is standing there.

It also changes what a club can stock. Chilled entrées need refrigeration that is monitored, which is not a thing a reception fridge does. Because the Smart Fridge™ holds and reports its own temperature, real food becomes something a club can offer without taking on the risk of running a kitchen fridge nobody is watching overnight.

Three steps

Tap a card or a phone

No app, no account, and nothing tied to the membership system, so a day-pass visitor uses it exactly as a member does.

Take what you want

Open the door, take as much as you like, put back what you change your mind about. Cameras inside track what leaves, and the charge matches it.

Heat it, if it is a meal

Induction, under 7 minutes, three at a time per tower. The post-class rush is not a queue.

What the club provides, and what it does not

A dedicated 30A, 120V circuit

For the Smart Cooker™. The Smart Fridge™ runs on a regular 120V outlet and needs no circuit of its own.

A network connection

WiFi or a hardwired Ethernet cable, one port. Cellular is a backup rather than the main link.

About 50 square feet

Beside reception, at the end of the floor, or in the space the vending bank currently occupies. No plumbing, no hood and no construction.

No fee of any kind

Raptor charges no placement fees and no minimums, and never invoices the club for the program. Restocking, cleaning, repairs, the menu and the marketing to members are Raptor's.

What runs in the background

The cold side is watched. The Smart Fridge™ holds 32 to 38°F with its temperature tracked around the clock and alerts if it drifts, so a fault reaches Raptor rather than a member. Anything past its freshness window cannot be sold at all, which does not depend on a staff member checking dates on a shelf.

The stock is watched too. Every cabinet reports what it holds, so restocking runs against what members are actually taking rather than a fixed route. Most faults are fixed remotely, and a member who needs to report something uses the code on the cabinet, which opens the help page with the club already filled in.

The club gets a usage report every month: transactions, popular items, usage patterns and restock performance. That is also the most useful thing in it, because it shows which classes and which hours generate the demand, which is not obvious from the floor.

The agreement

Infrastructure agreements run five years, and either party can exit if a problem is not cured within 30 days. Before that there is a 120-day trial with the full installation rather than a demonstration unit.

What members actually buy, and when

A club's demand does not look like an office's, and it is worth setting expectations honestly before anyone reads a sales figure into it.

Drinks and snacks move all day and are the volume. Entrées move in two bands: late afternoon into evening, when people train after work and have not eaten since lunch, and early morning at sites with a serious pre-work crowd. A club with neither of those patterns will sell drinks and not much else, and a tasting will show that faster than a projection will.

The menu rotates, which is what keeps the entrée side alive. Sixteen or more dishes in circulation means a member who trains four times a week is not looking at the same two meals, and that is usually the difference between an amenity people use and one they looked at once.

What the cabinet will not do is replace a café with a person in it. If the club's offer is somewhere to sit and a barista, this is not that, and it is better to say so than to install one and find out.

Where it goes

Reception is the default, because it is the route everybody takes out and the cabinet is under the camera that already exists. The alternative is the place the current vending bank sits, which has the advantage that the power is usually already close to right.

What matters more than either is the walk. A member leaving a class does not detour, so the cabinet wants to be on the way out rather than around a corner from it, and that single decision moves usage more than anything on the menu.

Frequently Asked Questions

Smart Café for gyms and fitness centers

What food actually works in a gym or fitness center?

Real meals, not just bars and shakes. The cabinet holds 14 chef-made entrées in rotation from Southerleigh Hospitality Group, with meat-free options and ingredients and allergens published for each, alongside snacks and drinks.

The Smart Cooker™ beside it heats an entrée by induction in under 7 minutes, which is the difference between a member refuelling on the way out and a member driving somewhere to do it.

Can members use it when the front desk is unstaffed?

Yes, and that is most of the point. The cabinet is locked and opens on a card or phone tap, so it runs at five in the morning and eleven at night without anyone rostered to watch it.

For a 24-hour club it means the food offer no longer stops when the staffed hours do.

What does it cost the gym?

Nothing to Raptor. No placement fees, no minimums, and the club is never invoiced for the program.

The club pays for its own electrical and network work: a dedicated 30A, 120V circuit for the Smart Cooker™ and a network connection. Members pay for what they take, and a chef-made entrée is $12.50.

What does the gym have to provide?

About 50 square feet, a dedicated 30A, 120V circuit for the Smart Cooker™, and either WiFi or a hardwired Ethernet cable. One port is enough; Raptor splits it to the rest of the equipment.

The Smart Fridge™ runs on a regular 120V outlet. No plumbing, no hood, no construction, so it can go in beside reception or at the end of the floor without taking a studio out of use.

Who cooks the meals?

Southerleigh Hospitality Group. Their restaurant, Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery, has held a Michelin Bib Gourmand three years in a row. The meal brand is Sense of Occasion.

Meals are cooked in their kitchen, sealed, and delivered chilled, so what a member heats is restaurant cooking rather than a reheated packet.

How do members pay?

By tapping a card or a phone. There is no app to download and no account to open, and nothing is tied to a membership system, so it works for a day-pass visitor as well as a member.

Nothing is charged until the door closes, and the charge matches what was taken.

How is theft prevented without a cashier?

The cabinet stays locked until a payment card or phone is verified, so nothing is reachable by someone who has not identified themselves. Cameras inside track what leaves the shelf and the charge matches it.

An open-shelf market cannot do that. In the 2023 Automatic Merchandiser survey, most micromarket operators put their losses at 3% to 7%.

How long does installation take?

Four to six weeks from a signed agreement, most of it the club's own electrical work. Once the circuit and network connection are in and tested, the cabinets go in within two to four hours.

It starts with a 30 to 45 minute assessment and a written proposal within five days.
